    Algorithmic transparency of conversational agents

    Get PDF
A lack of algorithmic transparency is a major barrier to the adoption of artificial intelligence technologies within contexts which require high risk and high consequence decision making. In this paper we present a framework for providing transparency of algorithmic processes. We include important considerations not identified in research to date for the high risk and high consequence context of defence intelligence analysis. To demonstrate the core concepts of our framework we explore an example application (a conversational agent for knowledge exploration) which demonstrates shared human-machine reasoning in a critical decision making scenario. We include new findings from interviews with a small number of analysts and recommendations for future research

Determinants of sucess and failure in internationalisation of the cork business : a tale of two iberian family firms

    Get PDF
The trajectories of internationalisation followed by family firms can be viewed from several theoretical approaches: phases and models of the internationalisation process; international entrepreneurship, the sociological perspective and family business theory. A historical perspective of internationalised family firms, allowing for the integration of the abovementioned approaches, is useful to obtain a deep understanding of the internationalisation process of different sectors and of different countries. The main purpose of this paper is to identify the facilitating and restricting factors during the internationalisation path of family firms, whilst considering the influence in their competitive advantages, of ownership structure, management attitudes and other intangible assets, as well as external factors to the firms, like location. The research involved a long run analysis (of more than one century) of two firms which operate in the cork business in Spain and Portugal: Mundet & C.ª, Lda and Corticeira Amorim. One of these companies - Mundet - was closed down in the 1980s and the other – Corticeira Amorim – became, and still is, the leading firm worldwide in the cork industry. A detailed comparison of these two histories - one of failure, and the other of success - permits an accurate identification of the determinants of successful internationalisation. In fact, this comparison is useful for understanding several characteristics of both firms, some of which are similar and others which are different, allowing to test several hypotheses within the context of the theoretical approach of the internationalisation of family firms. This methodological option can be justify by several aspects. Firstly, both are family firms operating in the same business and both were concentrated on the foreign market since their conception. Secondly, both their histories encompass most of the 20th Century and both faced similar national and international constraints, which were overcome, as they both ended up becoming the leading firms in the cork business, although at different periods of time. Thirdly, their choices of location were different and, although in both cases they benefitted from agglomeration forces during certain phases of the business, location was an important determinant of the opposing destinies of these two emblematic cork family firms from Iberia

Saul Bass (2014), designer norte-americano focado no design de comunicação, deu a seguinte definição: “Design is thinking made visual”. This project describes the work desenvolved by the student Ana Margarida Fontes Paiva, in order to obtain the master's degree in the Master of Design and Visual Culture of Iade - European University. The state of the art approaches fields of Visual Culture, Critical Design, Poster and Society, seeking to answer the question "Can the poster (still) work as a means of social criticism and awareness?" The project will focus on the elaboration of posters as a means of social criticism and awareness. As Bruno Pereira (2017) explains in a press release at the inauguration of poster, a public gallery in Marvila, "the poster was the first medium in which art and publicity came together in symbiosis. They have changed the world and changed the way the world communicates. They created wars, created heroes, and created the possibility of anyone lining the walls with pieces of history, a history of which we are all part of and must always continue to be." The poster is not only a platform for discussing society, politics, or design itself, it is a way of constructing a possible figurative or metaphorical utopia about life. In the 1970s, Italy was deeply marked by a creative movement, also called "Anti-Design", intensifying the discourse against the market and consumer relations in a capitalist society. Reflecting recurrently on the potential of the graphical arts, Ernesto de Sousa (2015) in the article The whole poster is political, chose the poster as a privileged "medium" at the service of creativity and democracy, for its capacity of synthesis and reception by an extended audience. It was therefore pertinent to choose a theme that allowed creative freedom and expression, in order to obtain different results when exploring different tools and materials. Saul Bass (2014), an American designer focused on communication design, gave the following definition: "Design is thinking made visual". It is a thought process that becomes something visible. Words, photography, drawing, illustration, collages, mixed media, and essentially typography, assume the poster format as a medium, through a set of graphic compositions that expose the results sustained by Criticism. The Qualitative Research is the first type of Methodology chosen and it takes form through the Documentary Analysis, mainly of Online origin and Case Studies. It is concluded that the project offers a perspective on contemporary society, consumer society, resulting from thoughts, reflections and experiences, where the poster is a means to present this perspective, through the most varied techniques. It is an exercise in provocative creativity, so your reading should take this premise into account. You have to utilize who you are in your work. Nobody else can do that: nobody else can pull from your background, from your parents, your upbringing, your whole life experience (David Carson, 2015, TedTalk Design and Discovery)

Ntóni Denti D'Oro - O Rei do Batuque

    Get PDF

    Talk2Care: Facilitating Asynchronous Patient-Provider Communication with Large-Language-Model

Despite the plethora of telehealth applications to assist home-based older adults and healthcare providers, basic messaging and phone calls are still the most common communication methods, which suffer from limited availability, information loss, and process inefficiencies. One promising solution to facilitate patient-provider communication is to leverage large language models (LLMs) with their powerful natural conversation and summarization capability. However, there is a limited understanding of LLMs' role during the communication. We first conducted two interview studies with both older adults (N=10) and healthcare providers (N=9) to understand their needs and opportunities for LLMs in patient-provider asynchronous communication. Based on the insights, we built an LLM-powered communication system, Talk2Care, and designed interactive components for both groups: (1) For older adults, we leveraged the convenience and accessibility of voice assistants (VAs) and built an LLM-powered VA interface for effective information collection. (2) For health providers, we built an LLM-based dashboard to summarize and present important health information based on older adults' conversations with the VA. We further conducted two user studies with older adults and providers to evaluate the usability of the system. The results showed that Talk2Care could facilitate the communication process, enrich the health information collected from older adults, and considerably save providers' efforts and time. We envision our work as an initial exploration of LLMs' capability in the intersection of healthcare and interpersonal communication.Comment: Under submission to CHI202
